The Roadmap

How do I get my first job?

Six steps, in the order they really happen. Nobody expects you to know everything, only to show up and keep learning.

01

Get ready to apply

Spend 10 minutes on a starter resume. It gathers everything the application asks for (school, availability, activities, references), so applying goes fast, and a printed copy makes you stand out in the interview.

02

Apply at McDonald's

Start with McDonald's. They like to hire motivated teens who have their parents' permission. Enter your zip code to see openings near you.

03

Show up to the interview

Be on time, dress neat, look them in the eye and smile. Bring your resume. Then accept the job when it's offered.

90% of success is just showing up.

04

Get your work permit

Got an offer? In Illinois, workers under 16 need a work permit before the first shift. You'll need your employer's letter, and a parent goes with you to the school office. Already 16? You can skip this step.

05

Prepare for day one

You'll feel like you don't know anything. That's normal. Listen carefully, ask questions and write things down.

06

Week, month, year

Show up on time. Listen to your boss. Do your work. Go the extra mile. Stack those days into a full year, and watch your resume grow with every month.

Track my first year →

Your first job isn't just about a paycheck. It's the launch pad for everything after.

One year of experience opens doors to management, college, the trades and the military.

Level Up

Earn badges as you grow

Every milestone counts. Collect badges for each step, track your first year on the job and print a certificate for each one.
